I recently finished the 2nd CARAVAN TO CATCH A KILLER. I was continually surprised, yet grateful for all the care and concern, that was paid to Brittany's murder and related issues. For 4200 miles and 5 weeks, people stopped to ask about my daughter, my car (it is fully "wrapped" with her pictures and facts about her murder) and about the multiple suspects we have ruled out through DNA analysis. The thousands of well wishes, hugs and prayers from all religions, thumbs up as cars drive by on the highways and so many communities' compassion towards Brittany's story is what gave me the strength to do this 2nd CARAVAN and now, hopefully to start out on the 3rd CARAVAN TO CATCH A KILLER. On 4/26/08 I began my 2nd CARAVAN TO CATCH A KILLER , traveling in my "wrapped" SUV across SE Texas and southern borders of southern states with a return loop through Florida and Eastern Georgia and back west across North sections of the same states with a few zigs and zags as I near Oklahoma. This 2nd CARAVAN continues my publicizing my daughter's murder by rape and suffocation Sept 27th, 2004 in Tulsa, OK as well as discussing how DNA backlogs and rape sentencing affect our investigation. (The 1st CARAVAN was 3600 miles from Tulsa to NYC and back 10/2007). We buried Brittany on her 19th Birthday I am an Oklahoma mom on a mission to tell Brittany's story across the US (this time 3900 miles so far) because of the more than 1300 individuals who have been ruled out through DNA analysis in SE Oklahoma. Many I have talked with are aware of the numerous stories of murderers moving "down the pike." We fear our killer may have escaped down I-35, I-10, I-75, I-95, I-65 and so on. With no national media to publicize Brittany's murder, and minimal real-time networking to share unsolved crimes, I have travelled alone down many of these highways and will, for as long as my funds allow, to help stop other families experience the same loss by this murderer's hands. He has possibly already killed again. Brittany's story IS about the "girl next door" and the increased risk of him being anywhere because rule outs through DNA comparisons have eliminated such a large number of suspects in OK and because many sex offenders plead down and are not monitored by legal systems. I must give credit to the numerous media groups that have given the gift of telling Brittany's story across 9 states on this CARAVAN. 4/30/08, Jennifer Dodd-San Antonio (KSAT ABC) caringly reported on Brittany's " Most mysterious murder since 2004 " (Nicole Marshall Tulsa World). 5/01/08 Keitha Nelson (Channel 9 Baton Rouge -CBS), created a beautiful, empathetic story. 5/04/08 Krystal Allen (WLOX 13-Biloxi-ABC) story pulled at heart strings. 5/06/08 Tiffany Craig (WKRG 5 Mobile-CBS), brought tears to my eyes as I watched the newscast- a mother's worst fears realized. 5/07/08 Blaine Tolison (Channel 6, Tallahassee-CBS) conducted a sensitive interview that connected with the community immediately. 5/09/08 Jessica Donofrio, (Channel 6 Orlando's,-CBS) brought forward the joy and pain that I carry. Mother's Day, 5/11/08 Beau Zimmer (Channel 10, Tampa/St. Petersburg-CBS) brought Brittany's story back to her birth home and site of her college freshman year . 05/18/8 Candace McCowan Fox Savannah treated our story as if Brittany was a home town girl. That same day (05/18/08)Tristan Tully Channel 3 NBC Savannah brought the passion of Brittany's life across the screen. For at least two days horns did not stop honking at me in response to Augusta's Paige Tucker's ABC 6 story ( 5/19/08). I still am in disbelief that Investigative Reporter Amanda Rossiter of Atlanta's Channel 2 ABC, spent hours asking questions, filming pieces that will be woven into a story that will air the first week in June. On 5/26 both Chattanooga Kristen Johnson of CBS 12 and Kim Fields ABC 9 met me within hours of my arrival and immediately I knew that southern compassion would come across in their caring and empathetic stories. 5/28 Nashville's Jennifer Johnson compassionate story touched a local business owner so much that he donated a generous amount to the CARAVAN (I do not seek nor ask for donations so his actions out of his own caring impacted me in an unbelievable way) 5/29, Memphis's Ben Watson (NBC) spent time that is usually used to prepare for the next newscast to interview me for a piece that aired the next day 5/30. Lynn Kawano of Dallas's Fox 4 spent hours driving around Dallas to get our story and people'sa reactions. Finally on 6/1 Mary Joseph of Oklahoma City's CBS 9 brought me home with poignant words. There is no way I can repay all this kindness, but hopefully the community's increased awareness and safety is my gift back. All of the cities visited were either directly connected by major highways that cross or connect to Tulsa and Oklahoma City. As noted, profiles suggest, access to major highways is the way some murderers vanish. This is why Dallas is a very important communityfor our story to be shared in. I plan to stay through Monday. I could stay later. Although finding Brittany's killer is a prime goal, I am also compelled to discuss how laws and justice processes have possibly impacted both her murder and the investigation and how these processes/laws need to be changed. I discuss how I once thought "it will never happen to me" when hearing about unsolved murders/other crimes. I wasn't prepared for numerous roadblocks to expanding investigations. If one keeps ruling out suspects locally, national searchs for suspects are hindered by 3 1/2 year backlogs in national DNA databases (from the time someone's sentenced until DNA is available nationally). Mine is also a mission to protect other daughter's families from such loss, regardless of what it costs me. I want to prevent others from having to explain, like I do, that my intelligent, beautiful daughter's rape/suffocation might have been prevented if rape laws didn't allow many arrested for rape to plead down to misdemeanors(DNA is not filed) with no time served. Her killer might have been found if it wasn't common for rape offenders, even if sentenced with a felony, to get quickly released and become one of the "lost" sex offenders. I would not be spending my money to travel cross country if national DNA databases weren't backlogged. I hope cities cities on the 3rd CARAVAN will be as receptive
Please help give Brittany's story voice.

Dr. Maggie.
Mother of Brittany Phillips 10/4/85 to 10/4/04

I will continue to tell the heart-rending story of my beautiful daughter's (Brittany Phillips) brutal rape /murder by suffocation on 9/27/04, a story of a never tiring investigation by Tulsa Detective Jeff Felton and the TPD (1200 suspects ruled out by DNA). My never ending fight to find Brittany's killer finds strength from all the supportive TPD, local media , business and individuals I meet in Tulsa and on the road (the 1st CARAVAN TO CATCH A KILLER traveled 3600 miles from Tulsa to New York City and back.) I have met thousands and many heard news stories in 13 states. Sadly, these are small numbers compared to those national news would reach. More daughters may be lost without this coverage. With so many DNA rule outs in Oklahoma, (1500 DNA samples run against ours) there is increased chance her killer has moved on. This is why telling Brittany's story is so important. It is also needed because it takes 3 ½ years from time a person enters prison for their DNA to show in national database and even then those charged with only misdemeanors do not have their DNA filed in databases (only felonies file/many rapists plead down to misdemeanors. Many people have donated time and services to us. A short film made by Tommy Wallace(a local film maker telling his version of her story) was shared with many reporters. The "WRAP" around my SUV was donated by Tulsa local comapny, Midwest Wraps and Fellers Vinyl (National). While I was away, Brittany's smile will watch over Tulsa on the Billboard donated three years ago by LAMAR Billboard. Brit's film, like my SUV, tells the story of her brutal rape/suffocation in her 2nd story apartment in the middle of the night in Tulsa Oklahoma on 9/27-28, 2004 (between 9pm and 8am) and how we buried her on her 19th Birthday (10/4/04). Hers is a story of an unsolved murder at 3 1/2 years, a murder called "the most mysterious murder since 2004."(Sexual homicides are rare in Tulsa). It is a story of how she died instantly, but lay for three days until a friend stopped by, about apartment managers not telling renters about her murder, how the apartment sat next to the high school she graduated from with full-ride scholarship in Chemistry, how she spent the scholarship year at my alma mater in Florida studying to be a pharmaceutical researcher in cancer, how, being a year younger than most, Brittany missed family and friends and came home to Tulsa. .only to be murdered. This so far is how our story ends. No longer does Brittany study pharmaceutical research in Cancer, no longer does she work meeting people, nor is she going back to modeling as she planned (modeled as a child). Now, as in real life, from my car, her striking looks; dark eyes surrounded by falling curls, her empathy, her beauty draw people close, attracting people to her.
